Selecting the perfect paint color for any space is challenging, but it’s even more so if you live in a small space. Paint has the power to make or break the overall aesthetic of your space. HGTV celebrity and Xtraroom design expert Chip Wade has helped hundreds of consumers maximize space with the perfect paint pallet on his Emmy-winning HGTV show Elbow Room. We chatted with Chip to gather his best tried-and-true tips for selecting the perfect paint color for small spaces like condominiums, lofts, bungalows, studios, apartments, and more.
Here’s what he recommends.
Light and Bright
Many designers believe that small spaces should opt for a single, consistent color pallet in paler tones that allows the natural light to shine through and create the illusion of more space. While Chip isn’t afraid of bolder choices, he does agree that this cohesive approach can be smart. White, soft taupe and pale gray can all be good choices. Some of Chip’s favorite gray paints includes Revere Pewter by Benjamin Moore, Edgecomb Gray by Benjamin Moore, Agreeable Gray by Sherwin Williams, and Useful Gray by Sherwin Williams. Simply White by Benjamin Moore is a no fail white that creates a crisp, clean visual.
Go Bold or Go Home
Chip is known to surprise and delight with bold color choices that spark conversation and creativity. If your personality is more daring, Chip recommends embracing the rich color trends of ink black or deep navy walls and trim. He believes it’s a myth that dark, saturated colors make a space feel smaller. If executed correctly, bold colors can add depth and dimension to a small space to lend a sophisticated vibe. For black paint, we love Broadway by Behr and Caviar by Sherwin Williams. Club Navy by Ralph Lauren is a great choice for a gorgeous navy hue.
Power of Accent Walls
If you want to add some exciting elements to your paint pallet, but you’re a bit intimated to paint your space bold black, an accent wall is a safe compromise to give just a pop of color to a small area. For example, if you’ve selected a pale gray for the majority of your space, consider painting a bolder color on the wall behind your bed, console table, or dining table. Rich plum, dark navy, emerald green, daring red, there are so many options- just be sure to execute thoughtfully and tie in the colors from the accent wall in your home accessories so that it all makes sense.
